Federation for Existential Therapy in Europe
One European community of existential therapists
FETE Exchange is a programme that lets students and members of any FETE member school take part in the activities of the other schools. Their formation draws on the whole European existential community: other traditions, other cultures, and peers in other countries with whom to build a European network of existential therapists. Until now this shared life happened mostly once a year; FETE Exchange brings it into everyday life.

How it works
Two tracks, side by side
One goes deep. The other keeps the network in touch all year. The seminars create the first contact; the groups give it depth.
In-person experiential groups
Join an experiential group hosted by another FETE school, in person. You do the work, on yourself and in the relationship, across languages, clinical traditions and styles.

FETE Exchange has just opened
The Board of Trustees adopted FETE Exchange on 22 October 2026. The first calendar of activities is being built now, from the proposals schools send in.
Could your school host an experiential group or a seminar? Tell us what you could open, even a single seminar. Expressing interest commits your school to nothing.
Taking part
How to take part
For students and members
- Find an activity in the FETE Exchange calendar, published on this page as soon as schools send their proposals.
- Apply directly to the host school. The host decides on admission.
- Tell your own school before you go, so the hours can be recognised.
- Attend, receive your certificate of attendance, and pass it to your school.
For schools and organisations
- Name a liaison and send their name and email address to the coordinator.
- Say what you can open. One seminar a year is enough to begin; an experiential group with a few visiting places is the most valuable contribution.
- Tell your students and members, and decide how your school will recognise the hours they bring back.
The certificate counts as extracurricular personal formation, added to the curriculum and never replacing it.
Our principles
One community across Europe
Open to every school
FETE Exchange exists to bring the existential therapists of Europe together and to nurture one European community of existential psychotherapists. Inclusion is its first principle: it is open to every school and organisation in the Federation. A school can take part without hosting, and the online seminars are free.
What holds the circuit together is what brought our schools into the Federation: the principles of existential therapy and the ethical standards each school upholds.
Language
English is the language most widely spoken across the Federation, so it is the preferred language of FETE Exchange. Where schools share another language, exchanges in that language are possible, keeping the principle of inclusivity.
Each host states the language of its activity. No certificate of English is required.

Terms of Reference
Version 1.0 · Adopted by the Board of Trustees, 22 October 2026
1PurposeA standing arrangement serving the aims of FETE
- 1.1FETE Exchange is a standing arrangement of the Federation for Existential Therapy in Europe through which members of the Federation take part, in English, in training activities hosted by member training institutes other than their own.
- 1.2It serves the stated aims of the Federation: to foster the development of existential therapy across Europe, to provide a platform for therapeutic, academic, theoretical and practical exchange, and to support Europe-wide training and education initiatives.
- 1.3It gives the Federation a continuous, working function between its annual meetings, at no cost to the Federation.
2DefinitionsHost, home institute, participant, liaison
- 2.1Member institute: a training institute or organisation in membership of FETE.
- 2.2Host: a member institute that offers an activity through FETE Exchange.
- 2.3Home institute: the member institute in which a participant is enrolled as a student, where applicable.
- 2.4Participant: a person taking part in an activity through FETE Exchange, as defined in section 4.
- 2.5Activity: a single offering under Track 1 or Track 2, as defined in section 3.
- 2.6Liaison: the person named by a participating institute as its contact point for FETE Exchange.
- 2.7Coordination function: the tasks described in section 8.
3Scope: two tracksIn-person experiential groups and online seminars
- 3.1FETE Exchange comprises two tracks, which run alongside each other. A member institute may offer one track, both, or none.
Track 1. In-person experiential groups
- 3.2Track 1 is the core of the arrangement. Participants join experiential group work hosted in person by a member institute other than their own, conducted in English.
- 3.3The host determines the nature of the group, the number of places open to visiting participants, the admission of each applicant, the prerequisites, and the fee.
- 3.4The enrolment fee, travel, accommodation, insurance and any visa costs are borne by the participant.
- 3.5The host may set conditions of participation, including the stage of training reached, a level of spoken English sufficient to take part, and a prior conversation or interview.
Track 2. Online and hybrid theory seminars
- 3.6Track 2 consists of teaching seminars in English, delivered online or in hybrid form, opened by the host to participants from other member institutes.
- 3.7Track 2 activities are free of charge to participants who take part through FETE Exchange.
- 3.8The host determines the capacity, the platform, the recording policy and the prerequisites, if any.
- 3.9The two tracks are complementary. The seminars keep the network in contact through the year and act as a first step; the experiential groups give the exchange its depth.
4Participation and eligibilityAll FETE members, voluntary, no reciprocity
- 4.1FETE Exchange is open to all members of the Federation, in every membership category. This includes students enrolled in a training programme of a member institute, individual members, and members of organisational members.
- 4.2A host may open a given activity to a narrower group where the nature of the activity requires it, and states this when the activity is published.
- 4.3Participation is voluntary throughout. No institute is obliged to host an activity, to send participants, or to take part at all.
- 4.4No reciprocity is required. An institute may send participants without hosting, and host without sending.
- 4.5No institute is required to offer a minimum number of activities, or to keep offering them.
- 4.6Applications are made by the participant directly to the host. The host decides on admission, and its decision is final.
5Recognition of attendanceCertified by the host, recognised by the home school
- 5.1The host issues each participant who completes an activity with a certificate of attendance stating the title of the activity, the host, the dates, the number of hours, the format and the language.
- 5.2The home institute may recognise those hours as extracurricular personal and cultural formation, in addition to its national curriculum.
- 5.3Recognition is at the discretion of the home institute and follows its own rules and the requirements of its national authority.
- 5.4FETE Exchange does not transfer academic credit, does not alter legally recognised or ministerially accredited curricular hours, and confers no qualification, title or licence.
- 5.5The value of the arrangement lies in the formation of the person of the therapist, not in an equivalence of credits.
6LanguageEnglish preferred; other shared languages encouraged
- 6.1English, as the language most widely spoken across the Federation, is the preferred language of FETE Exchange.
- 6.2Where member institutes share another language, activities and exchanges in that language are encouraged and may be published through FETE Exchange on the same terms.
- 6.3The host states the language arrangement for each activity, including any use of another language and any interpretation provided.
- 6.4No formal certificate of English is required. A host may state the level of spoken English it expects.
7Ethics, responsibility and confidentialityThe host’s code, insurance and national law apply
- 7.1Every activity is delivered under the ethical code, supervisory arrangements, insurance and national law of the host institute.
- 7.2Participants accept the ethical framework of the host for the duration of the activity, and are bound by the confidentiality of the group during the activity and afterwards.
- 7.3Concerns and complaints arising from an activity are handled under the procedures of the host institute. The home institute is informed where the participant consents or where the procedures of either institute require it.
- 7.4The Federation does not accredit, supervise, endorse or assume responsibility for the content or the conduct of activities offered through FETE Exchange. Its role is limited to publishing information and coordinating contact. This is without prejudice to the ordinary membership and accreditation procedures of the Federation.
- 7.5Participants apply directly to hosts and provide their personal data to them. The Federation publishes only the institutional contact details of liaisons, and holds no participant data beyond aggregate numbers.
8Governance and coordinationThe Board directs; each school names a liaison
- 8.1Direction of FETE Exchange rests with the Board of Trustees and the General Assembly.
- 8.2Each participating institute names a liaison, notifies the coordination function, and keeps the contact details current.
- 8.3The coordination function consists of: maintaining the FETE Exchange page and shared calendar on the Federation website; collecting activity entries from liaisons and publishing them; answering general enquiries and directing them to the relevant liaison; keeping a simple record of activities offered and participants received; and reporting once a year to the General Assembly.
- 8.4The coordination function does not admit participants, set fees, assess quality, or intervene in ethical or disciplinary matters.
- 8.5The Board of Trustees decides how the coordination function is carried out. It may entrust it to a member institute or to an individual member, for a term that it sets, and may rotate, reassign or withdraw it at any time.
- 8.6The coordination function is voluntary and unpaid.
9CostsNothing for FETE; no payments pass through it
- 9.1FETE Exchange carries no cost for the Federation beyond the use of its existing website. It creates no budget line, no fee, no salaried post and no contractual commitment.
- 9.2Track 1 costs are borne by the participant, as set out in clause 3.4. Track 2 is free of charge to participants.
- 9.3Hosts bear the cost of delivering the activities they choose to offer, and do so voluntarily.
- 9.4No payment passes through the Federation. Any financial relationship is between the participant and the host.
10Information and publicationOne web page and a shared calendar
- 10.1FETE Exchange is presented on a single page of the Federation website, carrying the description of the arrangement, these Terms of Reference, the list of participating institutes with their liaisons, and the calendar of activities.
- 10.2Liaisons submit activity entries in a short standard form: title, host, format, language, dates, total hours, number of places, fee, prerequisites, application contact and closing date.
- 10.3The accuracy of an entry is the responsibility of the host institute.
11Standing, review and withdrawalA standing arrangement, reported yearly to the General Assembly
- 11.1FETE Exchange is established as a standing arrangement of the Federation, in force from the date of adoption and without a fixed term.
- 11.2A short report is presented to each General Assembly: the activities offered, the institutes taking part, and the number of participants received.
- 11.3These Terms of Reference may be amended by decision of the Board of Trustees, subject to the General Assembly, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federation.
- 11.4A participating institute may withdraw at any time by notifying the coordination function. Commitments already made to admitted participants are honoured.
- 11.5The Board of Trustees may suspend or discontinue the arrangement at any time.
12Entry into forceIn force from the date of adoption
- 12.1These Terms of Reference enter into force on the date of their adoption by the Federation.
Amendments are decided by the Board of Trustees, subject to the General Assembly (section 11.3).
